Frequently asked questions about topical finasteride & minoxidil spray

Does topical finasteride work?

Topical finasteride works by counteracting the enzyme that is responsible for converting testosterone to DHT and causing hair loss. Clinical studies found that men with androgenetic alopecia (aka, male pattern baldness) who used the medication saw a significant increase in total hair counts, a decrease in hair loss and were pleased with their hair growth. Finasteride, a 5α-reductase inhibitor that prevents the conversion of testosterone to DHT, mixed with minoxidil (active ingredient in Rogaine®), a vasodilator that improves blood flow to follicles and promotes hair regrowth, is a topical formulation shown to effectively treat male pattern baldness. Plus, unlike hair transplants or oral medications, topical finasteride is non-invasive and easy to use.

Where can I buy topical finasteride?

Topical finasteride is available by prescription through some dermatologists and healthcare providers. Through Hims, you can connect with a medical provider and be evaluated for prescription topical finasteride & minoxidil spray online. If approved, you get your topical medication delivered straight to your door. It is important to note that neither topical finasteride nor topical finasteride & minoxidil in combination have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Oral finasteride is FDA-approved for the treatment of androgenetic alopecia in men and several minoxidil products are FDA-approved as over-the-counter treatment options for hair loss.

Why buy topical finasteride vs. oral?

Oral finasteride has been studied extensively and this one study (source) showed that 90% of users saw regrowth or reduced hair loss. Topical finasteride has not been studied as extensively, but there are some early studies such as this systematic review that show promising results. With the topical spray you get two clinically proven ingredients in one treatment (finasteride and Minoxidil)

Who is topical finasteride & minoxidil spray for?

The topical finasteride & minoxidil spray is used to treat male pattern hair loss (aka androgenetic alopecia), which involves a gradual thinning of scalp hair most obviously manifested as a receding hairline or balding on the top or crown of the head in men.

How do you apply topical finasteride?

With a once-a-day application of topical finasteride & minoxidil spray, you can fight hair loss with two active ingredients. Consistency is key for best results. The spray is designed to be a no-mess option for topical hair loss treatment. Of course, always use your medication exactly as your healthcare provider tells you.
  • Apply the prescribed amount of sprays across the 4 main zones of hair loss.
  • Rub or massage the solution in and let it absorb into the scalp. If you apply at night, let it dry completely before hitting the pillow. Finish off by washing your hands well.

What are common topical finasteride side effects?

Clinical studies have shown that topical finasteride is generally well-tolerated by most men who use it to treat male pattern baldness. However, it is important to keep in mind that the use of topical finasteride to treat hair loss has not been as comprehensively studied as oral finasteride. Like all medications, there is a risk of side effects with topical finasteride. Even though it is applied to the skin, topical finasteride may have a systemic impact. A 2018 study, found that serum DHT levels in male patients decreased while using topical finasteride compared to baseline, an indication that the medication can travel through the body. Having said that, systemic side effects typically associated with oral finasteride (e.g., erectile dysfunction, low libido) were not reported in the studies of topical finasteride treatment. However, additional research studies are required to better understand the systemic risks. The common side effects of topical finasteride were found to be localized to the site of topical application (scalp) and include: itching, irritation, burning sensation, flaking of the scalp, and redness. These side effects are typically mild in nature and resolve without intervention. If you do experience side effects with this medication, message a medical provider through the Hims platform. If you are allergic or have a hypersensitivity to topical finasteride or minoxidil, you may experience symptoms of an allergic reaction, such as rash, itching, hives and swelling of the lips, tongue, throat, and face. Seek emergency medical attention for an allergic reaction. If you are taking oral finasteride or dutasteride, a medication for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), you should not use topical finasteride, as combining the medications could increase chances of side effects.

Does finasteride work better when combined with minoxidil?

Yes. The two ingredients, finasteride & minoxidil are clinically proven to work best when combined (source). Minoxidil is a well established active ingredient used to revive follicles and increase hair density that works differently from finasteride. There are limited studies looking at the combination of topical finasteride and topical minoxidil, but this study found that topical finasteride and topical minoxidil combined showed significantly higher efficacy by global photographic assessment compared to topical minoxidil alone.

What causes hair loss in men?

Male pattern baldness, or androgenic alopecia, is the most common cause of hair loss. It is typically an inherited condition. As the condition progresses the natural hair growth cycle weakens and your hair follicles shrink, causing your hair to become shorter and finer. The exact cause for this type of hair loss is unknown but it is related to the production of the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Treatments that inhibit the production of DHT are sometimes effective in slowing, stopping, or reversing hair loss due to androgenic alopecia.

What ingredients are in the topical finasteride & minoxidil spray?

Active ingredients: 0.3% finasteride, 6% minoxidil. Inactive ingredients: alcohol (ethanol), propylene glycol, citric acid.

What dosage of topical finasteride & minoxidil spray is prescribed?

Your provider will prescribe what’s right for you. Typically 1ml per day (equal to 4 sprays) is prescribed for hair loss, although it may vary.

How long does it take for topical finasteride & minoxidil to work?

If you are using topical finasteride & minoxidil for hair loss, it may take 3-6 months before you start to notice early results. (source). Finasteride & minoxidil starts working as soon as it’s absorbed into your scalp. This means that you’ll start blocking the conversion of testosterone and have lower DHT levels as soon as the first dose of finasteride gets into your system. However, your hair grows through a multi-phase process that’s referred to as the hair growth cycle. This means that even though finasteride & minoxidil starts working immediately, you shouldn’t expect to see any changes in your hair for several months, even if you’re using the medication as directed. Rest assured that finasteride and minoxidil are actively working long before you can see the results.
